Dried Apples

Turn your extra apples into a healthy on-the-go snack by slicing and drying them.

Ingredients:

  • 5 Apples
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1 tsp cinnamon (optional)
  1. Wash and core apples (no need to peel).
  2. Slice apples thinly and evenly (1/4 inch), use a mandolin if possible.
  3. Submerge slices in a bowl with mixture of 1/4 cup lemon juice and 1 quart of water. Use a plate to keep them submerged if needed (to keep apples from browning).
  4. Remove slices from water and pat dry.
  5. Sprinkle slices with a light dusting of cinnamon (if desired)
  6. Arrange apple slices on wire baking or cooling racks and position in oven. Make sure they do not touch each other. If possible, you can also position apples directly on clean oven racks.
  7. Set oven at the lowest temperature (about 150°F) and prop door open with a wooden spoon to allow for air circulation and moisture to escape.
  8. Bake for 5 to 8 hours, checking regularly as times vary due to ovens, apple varieties, slice thickness, etc.
  9. Check apples for any moisture on both the outside and inside. They should not feel tacky, but dry and leathery.
  10. Allow to cool completely (this could take several hours) before storing in an airtight bag or container.
  11. Store in a dry, cool, dark place for several months. If you're unsure about their dryness store in a freezer.
